History and Information

Konya Mevlana Museum
Sema, the inspiration of Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi (1207 - 1273), is a part of Turkish culture, belief and history in Konya. It symbolizes different meanings of a mystical cycle leading to perfection (Ascension - Mirac).

Contemporary science certainly confirms that the basic condition of our existence is transformation. There is no object, no entity. Everything turns and the whirling dervish man, the revolution in atoms, the structural elements in his body, his blood circulation, comes from the Earth and continues his life by returning to him. Rotating with the world.

The Sema (whirling dervish) ceremony represents a mystical journey of man's spiritual ascension through love, finding the truth and reaching the "Perfect". Then he returns from these spiritual journeys as a man who has attained maturity and greater perfection to love and serve all creation, regardless of faith, class, or race.

With his hat (the tombstone of his ego) and white skirt (the shroud of his ego), the dervish was spiritually born into reality. When he takes off his black cloak, he travels and progresses towards spiritual maturity through the stages of the Sema. By holding his arms crossed at the beginning and every stage of the Sema, he represents a number and bears witness to the oneness of Allah.

With his arms open, his right hand is pointing towards the sky, ready to receive the approval of Allah, his left hand is turned to the ground to give what he has received to the poor, he turns from right to left and turns around the heart. This is the way of conveying God's spiritual gift to those on whom God "looks with divine prudence." Turning from right to left around the heart, it embraces all humanity, all creation with love and compassion.
